Don’t be afraid to ask if you want something.
Don’t assume people will do what you think they will.
Before I went public with eOpinion, I spoke to a couple of people about the business. One I wanted feedback from, one I thought would be interested in one of the Speedy Poll solutions.
I know both pretty well and as they were congratulating me and praising the idea, I assumed it was a no brainer they would sign up for the Daily eOpinion.
Hitting refresh on my subscriber list post each chat, they never appeared and I was a bit put out.
Time passed by though. I was busy getting everything ready for launch day, chatting to prospective clients, ensuring everything was covered and the matter was quickly forgotten.
Until about a week ago, when over a glass of wine one night, my wife asked how things were going. I updated her in general and also mentioned the above.
‘Did you ask them to sign up?’ she asked.
‘No’ I replied, ‘I just assumed they would.’
‘Why don’t you drop them a message and ask them?’
So I did.
Both apologised saying they didn’t really think about it at the time and signed up within minutes.
Sometimes you just need to ask if you want something done, don’t assume your mind is easily read.
One thing I’ve learned over this process, people are generally pretty happy to support if you ask them to.
