Pulling at a thread.

Colourful fridge magnet letters spelling IDEA on a kitchen fridge, next to a child's drawing of a house

This isn't something I normally post about, but I've started something new. Watch the short video, or read the full transcript underneath if you'd rather.

This isn't something I normally post about.

I've been starting things for years. Side projects, little businesses, half-baked ideas with a bit of moderate success here and there. I'm always looking for the one, but nothing, nothing ever really took off.

Then one afternoon, I watched my kids do something I'd never seen them do before.

They were at my in-laws, and I arrived to pick them up. Grandpa was calling out words loudly. The two of them were sitting on the floor with a pile of fridge magnets, racing each other to try and spell them out. They were having fun, laughing, both trying to get it first. They were completely locked in.

Now, here's the weird bit. They were doing spellings, and nobody had forced them to do it. They were doing it for fun. If you've ever tried to get your kids to do their spellings and get them in on time, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Anyway, we had somewhere to be, so I needed to end the game. And what struck me was really strange: there was no meltdown, no negotiation, no "just one more go", no "just five more minutes". Nobody seemed to mind. If you're a parent like me and you've ever tried to turn off a screen, you will know how rare that is.

So, as you can imagine, immediately my mind started spinning. Is there something in this? I thought.

This is the start. Me pulling at that thread and seeing what happens. It's not a fully formed idea yet, but I am excited. I'll share the whole journey: what works, what doesn't, my thought processes, my learnings, everything about it.

And if you have got primary school-aged kids, I think it's going to be for you, so make sure you follow along.
